CAREER HISTORY

LAKEHEAD UNIVERSITY STUDENT UNION, THUNDER BAY, ON MAY 1995 – AUG 2002
DIRECTOR OF FINANCE & ADMINISTRATION / GENERAL MANAGER

· Oversaw the operations of the Outpost, a Student Union owned bar/restaurant.
· Managed and operated “The Study”, a games room / lounge for students.
· Supervised 4 full time and 10 part time staff members; responsible for all Human Resource issues.
· Prepared annual budgets ($1,500,000), cash flow forecasts, monthly financial statements and audit working papers for the Student Union and the Outpost.
· Developed and implemented internal controls and cost controls.
· Presented audited financial statements to the Board of Directors.
· Revamped the LUSU Constitution, helped write new policies and developed employee manuals.
· Administered the student health plan for 2,000 full-time students.
· Negotiated contracts with varied service providers.
· Co-ordinated renovation projects including upgrading the Study and re-carpeting the Outpost.
· Advised student executive on all financial matters and on new projects under consideration.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
· Reduced costs in the Outpost by more than $150,000 by implementing internal controls and management reporting systems; thereby resulting in a breakeven business.
· Oversaw a $300,000 renovation project in The Study from conception to construction. Led a team consisting of the student executives, staff and the architect that consulted on the initial design and the finishes. Ordered furniture and fixtures and dealt with suppliers.
· Reduced audit fees by preparing the entire audit file in advance, including the audited financial statements.
· Instrumental in setting up a “Building Fund Fee” to be used for major repairs and maintenance, renovations, and capital acquisitions in Student Union space; which allowed the Student Union to maintain its existing facilities without cutting services in other areas.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS
· Taught other senior auditors how to use the Financial Information Return computer program.
· Instigated KPMG’s adoption of a portion of the highway near Thunder Bay. The sign erected on the highway provided advertising for KPMG and identified the firm as a good member of the community.
· Co-ordinator of KPMG’s local Uniform Final Examination (UFE) preparation program. Taught preparation courses to employees planning to write the UFE. All candidates were successful in their first attempt at the UFE.
